Bioinformatics Data Pipeline
A highly parallelized data architecture designed to accelerate genomic sequencing analysis using distributed computing frameworks.
Category
Biotech & Distributed Computing
Tech Stack
Apache Spark, Rust, AWS EKS, Terraform, Nextflow
Primary Impact
Significantly reduced sequencing analysis turnaround times.
The Challenge
A biotech research organization was struggling with data bottlenecks. Their existing bioinformatics pipeline relied on monolithic infrastructure that processed large genomic datasets sequentially. This approach led to long analysis turnaround times, delaying downstream research and stretching compute budgets.
The Solution
We re-architected their analysis workflow into a scalable, fault-tolerant pipeline using Apache Spark and Nextflow. Critical alignment algorithms were optimized using Rust to maximize thread efficiency. The entire infrastructure was containerized and orchestrated via Kubernetes (AWS EKS), allowing the system to dynamically provision compute resources based on queue depth and scale down when idle.
The Impact
The modernized pipeline provided the research team with a much faster, more reliable toolset. The transition to a distributed architecture reduced analysis bottlenecks, enabling the firm to process multiple population cohorts concurrently and accelerate their data-driven research initiatives.
